Favorite Read Alouds

I’m getting my new assistant trained (she’s amazing and only lacks confidence, not skill), and we were discussing the books we’d love to have on hand for reading aloud with various age groups. Some of mine are owned by my non-circulating story time collection, and some I own personally, but there are always ones missing. Here’s a breakdown of books I love to share with kids:

Picture Books:
Happy Birthday, Moon by Frank Asch
The Little House by Virginia Burton
The Uglified Ducky, a Maynard Moose Tale by Willy Claflin
Be Nice to Spiders by Margaret Bloy Graham
Abe Lincoln Crosses a Creek by Deborah Hopkinson
When God Made the Dakotas by Timothy Kessler
Epossumandas series by Colleen Salley
Harry the Dirty Dog by Gene Zion
Many Moons by James Thurber (I prefer the one illustrated by Marc Simont)
Tops and Bottoms by Janet Stevens
The Donkey Egg by Janet Stevens

Chapter Books:
Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo
Lafcadio, the Lion Who Shot Back by Shel Silverstein
The Twits by Roald Dahl
McBroom’s Wonderful One-Acre Farm by Sid Fleischman
Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper

Holiday Books:
Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins by Eric Kimmel
The Spider’s Gift by Eric Kimmel
The Twelve Worst Days of Christmas by Sudipta Bardhan-Quallan

Folklore:
Lon Po Po by Ed Young
Tikki Tikki Tembo by Arlene Mosel

Soap! Soap! Don’t Forget the Soap! by Jim Aylesworth
The Beckoning Cat: based on Japanese folklore by Nishizuka, Koko
